GERMAINE (GERRY) CHEYS July 9, 1912 - October 20, 2011 Gerry Cheys passed away peacefully at the Vista Park Lodge with her daughter Edna by her side. She will be sadly missed by her loving family and friends. Gerry was predeceased by her husband Maurice in 1997. She is survived by her daughter Edna (Russ) Guinan and grandchildren Greg (Paula), Dan (Joseph), Allan (Chris) and Carolyne (Tom) Lynch; great- grandchildren Elycia, Kelsey, Patrick and Katie; great-great-grandchildren Daniella and Peyton. Gerry was predeceased by her parents Henri and Clarisse Walleyn, her sister Irene Van De Walle and brothers Andre and Firmin. Gerry was born in Ghent, Belgium on July 9, 1912. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1917 and settled on the family farm in St. Alphonse, Manitoba. In 1932 she came to Winnipeg to study nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1934 she met and married Maurice and they resided in St. Boniface where she was an active partner in their cattle operation. In 1968 they retired to Fort Garry, to be closer to their family. Gerry was proud of her home and garden. Fresh baked bread and homemade soup were her specialties. Her flowers were amazing! Gerry loved to travel. Gerry and Maurice spent 30 years as snowbirds, traveling to Texas and Arizona, gathering many close friends along the way. Gerry loved a party. She was always ready for a few jokes and a round of cards. The Family would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the staff at the Vista Park Lodge who cared for Gerry with kindness and compassion in her final days. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Mary Mother of the Church Roman Catholic Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 1:30 p.m., Fr. Kevin Bettens, Celebrant.
